It is true that both cat5 wiring and cat6 wiring look alike but cat 6 wire’s interior shielding gives the superior performance with the less interference. Cat5 wiring comes in stranded or solid forms with a solid form which is more effective over very long distances. Cat 5 wire’s maximum bandwidth of hundred megahertz makes it an ideal for the standard ethernet speed.

Whereas cat6 wiring consists of 4 pairs of the twisted copper wire like the Cat 5 wiring. It can easily handle double bandwidth. Cat6 wire contains the extra component which prevents crosstalk between wire pairs. A resulting performance boost will allow the cat6 wire to handle till 250 megahertz. Cat6 wire’s compatibility with the existing cat5 wire installations makes it future proof and backward compatible thus making it a wiser option for the new installations.
